Problem Gambling Technical Assistance and Training Project

The gambling industry has an enormous impact on California’s economy and residents. The 53 tribal casinos, 95 card rooms, horse racetracks, and state lottery games generate approximately $4 billion per year of revenue, and this number is expected to rise to $10 billion by 2010. This rapidly growing industry results in a wide range of psycho-social and economic issues for individuals and families.

Through a contract awarded by the California Department of Alcohol and Drug Programs (ADP), Office of Problem Gambling (OPG), we provide technical assistance and training in the area of problem gambling prevention throughout the State of California. The purpose of this project is to educate the public and train a broad range of service providers, government agency personnel, and community leaders to help prevent and/or treat problem gambling. All services are offered free of charge.

In order to implement and monitor this project, we have created a Project Consortium. At the core of the Consortium are four Program Partners:

The California Office of Problem Gambling (OPG) Announces the Launch of the California Problem Gambling Treatment Service Program (CPGTSP)

The Office of Problem Gambling (OPG) in partnership with UCLA Gambling Studies Program (UGSP) is is currently recruiting to participate in the California Problem Gambling Treatment Service Program (CPGTSP).

To become an authorized provider in the CPGTSP, therapists are required to attend state funded training focusing on the treatment of problem and pathological gamblers.  Training will consist of four eight hour training days, and will provide the opportunity to obtain up to 30 Continuing Education Units (CE units) for MFT’s, LCSW’s, PhD’s and PsyD’s

Therapists who meet the below listed criteria must submit the attached application to UGSP for admittance into the training. Due to limited space, admittance into the trainings will be on a first come first serve basis.

  • Must possess a licensed clinical degree, current and in good standing: Doctor of Medicine (MD); Doctor of Psychology (PsyD); Doctor of Psychology (PhD); Doctor of Osteopathy (DO); Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT); or Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW).
  • No violations or pending actions as a result of a formal complaint to the California Board of Behavioral Sciences, Board of Psychology, and Medical Board of California
  • Current malpractice insurance
  • Must have a HIPPA compliant personal computer with Internet access

CPGTSP participants will not be charged a registration fee for training. Participants will be responsible for all travel and accommodation expenses. Therapists who are in the process of acquiring one of the listed licenses may submit an application for review. Applications will be reviewed on a case by case basis, and therapists may be admitted into training prior to licensure, however, to seek reimbursement for services as an authorized provider the therapist must have a license.

The scheduled dates and locations for future trainings are listed below:

  • January 12 - January 15, 2011, Los Angeles Area
  • February 9 - February 12, 2011, Bay Area
  • April 13 - April 16, 2011, San Diego
  • May 11 - May 14, 2011, Sacramento
  • September 28 - September 30, 2011, San Francisco
  • October 19 - October 21, 2011, Orange County

After completion of training, a therapist who meets criteria to become an authorized provider will be eligible to receive fee for service reimbursement from the state.

Problem Gambling Cultural Competency Training

In conjunction with the California Problem Gambling Treatment Services Program Provider (CPGTSP) Training, NAPAFASA will be conducting two Problem Gambling Cultural Competency Trainings in Northern California on 10/29/11 and Los Angeles on 11/19/11.

The trainings will be from 9:00AM to 3:00PM and lunch will be provided.   Details of both trainings will be announced once they are finalized.

The Office of Problem Gambling (OPG) strives to meet the needs of diverse cultures throughout the State of California and they strongly recommend attending the NAPAFASA Cultural Competency Training. Northern California Problem Gambling Regional Summit at Santa Rosa

The focus of the Northern CA Summit will be to raise awareness about problem gambling, ways to prevent it, and resources available to help gamblers and their loved ones. The Summit will feature cutting-edge research from experts in the field, personal stories from recovering problem gamblers and family members of problem gamblers, and several stimulating breakout sessions focused on skills building. The goal for the day is to empower more service providers and community members alike to be more equipped to address problem gambling in their professional and personal life.

DATE: Friday, November 19, 2010 TIME: 9:00 am - 3:30pm (Breakfast and Registration begins @ 9:00 am, please arrive promptly)

LOCATION: Finley Community Center, 2060 W College Ave., Santa Rosa, CA 95401

COST: FREE! Incl. lunch provided for registered participants, and FREE CEUs! (CEUs available for psychologists/PsyD's, LCSWs, MFTs, RNs, and various California addiction certificates/credentials)

Who should attend?: Clinicians, Social Workers, Addiction Counselors, Mental Health Staff, Case Workers, Direct Service Providers, Prevention Staff, Health Care Workers, & General Public interested in issue of problem gambling.
